Self Storage companies team up with Streetvan

Streetvan is part of Streetcar, which describes itself as a “pay-as-you-go car club”, and provides an ideal solution for many people moving into or out of self storage.

They rent out vans for £8.95 per hour or £79.50 per day and have the advantage that once you are a Streetcar member you just book online and go straight to a locally parked van with your card.

As a user of storage you will need to join which costs about £60 per year (though only £100 for two years) but also gives you benefits of insurance, support and use of cars as well as vans. Streetcar have identified London as their prime initial market and have lots of vans and cars in the greater London area, as well as having a few in wealthier cities including Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh, Southampton and Guildford.

“Give a Streetvan a home” – especially if you own a self storage facility

At least two of the larger self storage companies, Access and Big Yellow, have done deals allowing Streetvans to park in their storage facility car parks. You can find the location of their vans on Streetcar’s website and they are even looking for more places to park them  – if you run a self storage centre your forecourt may be ideal. To store their vans they require space that is well lit, with pedestrian and vehicle access and ideally room for a sign.

Cheaper to use, greener and you don’t have to store the vehicle

According to Streetcar renting a car or van from them is very environmentally responsible as well as being economical.

They reckon that the typical cost of regularly using one of their cars rather than owning one is about £700 rather than £2,750. Renting a van or car from them to move into self storage may become more attractive soon as they look likely to be taken over by Zipcar of the US, giving them access to vehicles in the Zipcar network.  However since August 2010 this takeover has been on hold as it has been referred to the UK’s Competition Commission.

Discounts on van hire for self storage users

If you sign up a storage unit with Streetcar’s self storage partners you will get £20 worth of free driving for a van or a car.  You could also find it particularly easy to get hold of the car or return it to the parking spot as it will be parked so close to your storage unit.
