Henfield self storage – the best value storage in south-west London?
Andy Vaillant is an employee at the Wimbledon branch of Henfield Self Storage, which contains about 800 self storage units. This storage centre is interesting because it used to be a very large car repair facility: in order to convert the building to self storage the owners gutted it and purpose-built storage units inside.
Andy says he has two main selling points: free collections (see below) and price – customers keep telling him he is a lot cheaper than the competition – and Andy hopes to keep it that way.
He currently charges £23.80 a week for 100 square feet. Some customers say that Henfield’s monthly prices aren’t much more than what Big Yellow would charge for a week, and the Times even wrote an article stating that they were 64% cheaper than their nearest competition.
Collecting furniture helps boost occupancy at Henfield’s Wimbledon storage facility
If customers are willing to show their long-term commitment to self storage by paying for 6 months in advance, Henfield offers a service where they send out a man and van and to collect all their stuff for them. This applies within a thirty mile radius of Henfield self storage, meaning they cover virtually all of London.
The Horsham branch (off the A24) offers free van hire for people to move their stuff into storage. That branch also offers the older removal solution where people can put their things into a plywood crate which then gets stored in the Henfield Horsham warehouse.
What sort of customers do you have? Is it all private storage?
Andy reckons about 80% of his users are domestic or personal but 20% are business. Many of these are storing business archives and hence don’t need to visit very often.
His own background before he joined Henfield was working as a self-employed man-and-van business so he knows lots about helping people move house. He likes being in the self storage business because it allows him to concentrate on dealing with customers and giving them good service. Henfield sell padlocks but have decided not to get involved with selling cardboard cartons and other packaging materials.
How does the rest of the Henfield Storage business work?
There are three fully owned self storage branches which are at Horsham in West Sussex, Staples Corner in North London and of course Wimbledon in South West London. But Henfield also have franchises in Glasgow, Birmingham and Bradford. They are a family run business who are very friendly and reasonable to deal with.
One of the nicest features of their website is the “show man/hide man” feature where for each size of storage unit you see a picture of a man in the storage space to help give a feel for the size of the unit, but you can click to hide man and he disappears. Click again and he reappears. It’s worth visiting their website just for this but it’s actually very useful to be able to see a picture showing the size of each unit, and of course they show prices too.
