Storage by the seaside: self storage in Poole

It’s a little-known fact that two of the five British women to be voted Miss World were born in Poole, showing the town has plently to recommend it beside Victorian architecture and seaside views. Perhaps more suprisingly, Poole is also home to a growing self storage industry, which could seem a little out of place in a quiet seaside town.

Why do people need self storage in Poole?

A number of factors make people need self storage in Poole. Chief amongst them is house prices, something the town has recently become famous for. The exclusive Sandbanks neighbourhood – where Premier League footballers mingle alongside property developers and City bankers – has caught headlines for having the fourth-most expensive land on earth. Five-bedroom houses change hands here for prices around the £10 million mark, and while this small area is exceptional it does reflect the generally high value of property in Poole.

High house prices tend to result in wealthy people occupying small, modern homes that may lack storage space. As richer people tend to own more belongings, this is a perfect recipe for self storage ‒ one the big self storage firms have been quick to exploit in Poole.

This is underscored by the age of much of the population. More than a fifth of people in Poole are over 65, giving it a reputation as somewhere to retire to. This means many new arrivals are downsizing and have a lifetime’s worth of possessions to fit in their small retirement homes, again pushing them towards self storage.

The traditional economy of Poole has also proved useful for self storage firms. With the world’s second largest natural harbour lying in front of the town, local industry has understandably revolved around boats.

In the early 20th century ninety per cent of local men worked on the docks and, while fishing and container-shipping remain important, the industry’s decline has left behind former warehouses that are ripe for converting to self storage use. Poole also has a lot of industrial estates, again meaning there are a lot of potential warehoues in the area.

Who provides self storage in Poole?

Big Yellow Self Storage, the national giant that seems to have a presence in every geographical market worth having, has included Poole in its targeted expansion of sites outside London. They occupy a very stylish property near the harbour on Nuffield Road.

Lok’nStore are also involved in Poole self storage, having a large warehouse even closer to the coast on Willis Way. The fact that Spacemaker – in partnership with Safestore – also has a warehouse on Wallisdown Road means all the UK’s ‘Big 3’ are represented in Poole, underlining its importance as a self storage market.

In addition to these, three smaller firms have storage facilities in Poole. These are: Avon Self Storage, an outdoor container-storage firm on Dalling Road; Storewise, another container business on Ringwood Road; and Cobbs Quay Self Storage, a facility actually located in the marina that specialises in looking after boats and watercraft.
