Tips for moving house

Moving house is a very big life event. Many people approach the prospect with different feelings: whilst it can be an exciting time, it can also be highly stressful, therefore it is important that you prepare for every eventuality. Catherine Thompson from Propertyads – a new, up and coming property search portal – offers her top tips and recommendations for how to make the packing and moving much easier.

Clear out

Before moving is the perfect time throw out all of your clutter, says Catherine. You should use this as a time to get rid of furniture which you never use or is outdated, electronic equipment (such as old HiFis and stereos), and textiles (your old linen, curtains, carpets and rugs). These items don’t have to go straight to the tip, but can be recycled into charitable schemes, or even sold on Ebay or Gumtree.

Organise

Once you’ve got rid of the stuff you don’t want, start organising the stuff you do want.

If you are downsizing and haven’t got space for the things you really love, then this is where self storage could come in. Rented self storage space can be used for any time period ranging from a week to years.

Prices are very varied depending on what type of storage you go for, and what you are storing, and for how long you are storing. Discounts may be offered to people for many different reasons, whether you’re a student, using the service over a long time period or even a new customer. Most storage websites will be able to give you a quote online when you enter the amount of space you require, and the length of time you intend to use it.

Children and animals

When moving house, you need to think well in advance about what you are going to do with your children and pets. If you’re not moving too far, the obvious solution is to ask a friend or relative to take care of them during the moving process. If money isn’t so much of an issue, finding a cattery or kennel may be the best option for cats and dogs.

Young children can be an impediment to the complex, laborious and sometimes physically demanding business of packing and moving, so finding them a place to go for much of the day, and even for a night or two, could help you to free up time.

If your children are a little older, stop them sitting in the corner mooching and get them involved with the packing and unpacking process. Giving them the freedom to unpack their own new room will give them something to do, and they may even enjoy it!

Insurance

Don’t forget to insure yourself during the moving process. The loss or damage of expensive items, especially the essentials such as your refrigerator or television, could cost you thousands of pounds and make the moving process more expensive and stressful.

The same applies to storage: if your property is lost or damaged at a self storage centre, then you need to make sure you are compensated for it.
